Campaign Canvas vs Program Builder?

I was taught (in a crash course) to ALWAYS use the Program Builder, for almost everything except a single email blast.

I'm just wondering if it is more a preference issue or if the Campaign Canvas should be used primarily and then the Program Builder for more advanced functionality.
